Why Do Etched PTFE Tube Also Need a Tie‑Layer?

A hidden component that unlocks greater potential for inert PTFE. In medical catheter manufacturing, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is nearly the first choice for liner materials due to its ultra‑low friction coefficient, excellent chemical resistance, and electrical insulation properties.

However, PTFE has an inherent drawback: surface inertness, meaning it barely bonds with other materials. To solve this, the industry typically applies surface etching to PTFE to activate its surface, enabling bonding with other polymers or adhesives. But this is often insufficient. For higher composite stability and multifunctional performance, a tie‑layer has become essential.

What Is a Tie‑Layer?

A tie‑layer is essentially a functional intermediate layer. It bonds well with the etched PTFE surface and is also compatible with outer polymers, acting as a bonding bridge. In short, the tie‑layer is the key to maintaining a durable and stable bond between modified PTFE and various outer materials.

Additional Functions of a Tie‑Layer in Etched PTFE tube

① Improved bonding strength
Although etching increases surface activity of PTFE, local delamination can still occur during bonding with outer layers. A tie‑layer further enhances adhesion between inner and outer layers, ensuring structural stability during catheter use.

② Resistance to environmental aging
Etching reduces surface inertness of PTFE, making it more vulnerable to humidity, temperature, and other environmental factors. The tie‑layer acts as a protective barrier for the etched surface, extending the service life of the composite structure.

③ Improved process compatibility
With a tie‑layer, etched PTFE can be more freely combined with PA, Pebax, or metallic braided layers, providing a wider processing window and greater design flexibility.
